First ad in the paper for the Grand Aldi's opening in Warwick on March
3rd. They have at least 3, possibly 4 others planned for RI.
What's good there?

Eh! If you enjoy a store full of inexpensive off-brands, Aldi's is for
you. If who are interested in shopping as frugally as possible, you will
benefit by shopping there. If you prefer name brand groceries, you
probably will not be happy shopping at Aldi.
One word of advise, bring your own shopping bags because they have none. |

Not true. They have name brand items every week, you just never know what
they
might be.
My last good deal was Nabisco Wheat Thin chips, they are a thinner, toastier
version of wheat thins my family loves. They are $3 a bag everywhere--like
most packaged snacks, really overpriced. At Aldi I paid $1 a bag.
Another good deal--the Butterball turkey I got for 89 cents a pound week
before Thanksgiving, and the Smithfield honeybaked spiral-cut ham for
$1.50 a pound the same week.
I noticed many name-brand candies there tonight--Reeses, Hersheys, etc.,
lots of Easter candy, but also a great selection of much better imported
chocolates and other candies, cookies, and biscuits/crackers.
Six-pound Stouffer's Lasagne was on special there this week, too.
Aldi produce is generally grown in the US, and is much cheaper and
prettier than that I see in Kroger, HT and Food Lion. Giant cucumbers
for 50 cents a piece when others sell them for a buck, etc.
Also, in canned goods, they have those great bean and jalapeno
etc. combos, by Margaret Holmes. Best canned legumes
of this kind that I have had.
I love Aldi. |

You will save half on canned goods, staples like vegetables. I got Jasmine
Rice, Aldi's brand and very good, for $1.89, instead of the usual $4 for 32
oz. Peas for 40 cents a can instead of a buck, that sort of thing.
What's fun is going to see what is there every week--it changes! |

According to three women I know, who have advanced degrees in chocolate
studies, Aldi's brownie mix is to die for. Better than any boxed mix they've
ever tested. |

I love Aldi's. I have 3 teenage boys! Their cereal is comparable to
national brands. The granola with raisins is very good.
Ice cream sandwiches, fudgesicles are great.
The produce is the same that I see in the grocery store.
Cheese, yogurt and milk are also good.

The only Aldi's I've been in only sold dry/canned goods. When
did they start offering real groceries?

The Aldi's over here have some pretty good bargains in them. Comparable
products, but with the Aldi brand name. They also do bargain
elecric/electronic gear.
And their meat range is excellent quality and price.

I'm going to go get one of these coffee grinders to use for spices.

The grinder I have at the moment was double that price!!

The one I went to was mostly canned and dry stuff. I believe they had a
freezer case or two and some odd things like stuffed animals and videos.
Very small store. |

Anything in cans or boxes is likely to be of reasonable quality -- that
is, equivalent to more expensive stuff at other groceries.
Fresh meat and poultry has more water and salt added than at other
groceries.
Ground turkey is of reasonable quality.

They're opening one in Providence too. I haven't seen the timetable for
it but it's coming to where the Super Value once stood on Smith St.
And in other news, the Price Rite is moving into the space formerly
occupied by Shaw's on Valley St. I wonder what'll happen to the current
Price Rite location. I could wish for a TJ's but in Olneyville that
just won't happen. |

They seem to trying to race to the bottom of quality with walmart. They
remodeled the ones in my area last year and put in a bunch of
refrigerated/freezer space. Now they have the Walmart style "fresh
meat" and lots of frozen stuff with "up to a 30% of a solution has been
added" noted on the label.
