I have a type 1 diabetic daughter who is now in her teen years. She
was diagnosed type 1 at age 7 and we have been counting carbs
religiously ever since. My question tho is this.
How many carbs per meal to maintain a healthy balance and not gain
allot of weight.
I know exercise is important and that there is a big difference if
the carbs are straight sugar (fast action in BG #s) or more complex
carbo's, but i was curious what other ppl were having the best luck
with.
Currently she's on approx 5 carb's (15 grams each) and 2 protein
choices per meal but seems to be putting on some added weight.

Any input will be greatly appreciated

Murray

P.S. If this is the wrong place to ask questions like this and there
is another news group that would be more suited, please make me aware
of it.
Thanks

Thanks Sue, my server doesn't show "alt.support.diabetes" but did
have "misc.health.diabetes". Lots more posts there.

Thanks

She really needs to see a dietician for this. Diet varies so much from
person to person depending on height, weight, activity level, etc. There is
no one diet that we all use.

This isn't the wrong place to ask questions, but you might get a lot more
answers if you went to alt.support. diabetes or
misc. health. diabetes

More people seem to frequent those groups. There is also a news group named
alt. support. diabetes. kids but I don't know anything about that
one.

Like Julie said, you really should talk to a dietician and your family
doctor about this, but...

Teenage girls are *supposed* to gain weight. It's part of growing up.

I strongly recommend that you don't make this about her weight at all. If
she's getting enough exercise, is eating a relatively healthy diet, and is
an active teen, don't worry about her weight, it'll settle down.

Mucking around with calorie intakes and carbs when she's eating at levels
she should be (which you can confirm with a dietician, as long as you don't
get hold of a fat phobic dietician who thinks 1000 calories a day for a
growing girl is more than enough) can actually do harm to her metabolism at
this point in her life. It can also contribute to her having way too much
of a focus on food and eating issues, which can lend itself nicely to
eating disorders, which, as a diebetic, is the last thing she needs.

Her body is changing and that's normal, natural, and healthy. It'll settle
down into an adult shape as she gets older, and she'll be the weight that
works best for her. Concentrate on developing the good eating and exercise
habits, the rest will fall into place.

She's getting the "fat=bad" message from every other source in the
universe, she doesn't need it from you, too (which is what you're telling
her if you focus on the number that represents her mass on this particular
planet instead of just focusing on what her body needs to keep growing and
finishing her transformation into a woman).

I have but am always looking for hands on experiences. Doctors and
Dieticians don't have ALL the answers and i like to research a little
for myself.

True, I'm just not going to wait till she's 200lbs before i see if
i'm doing right by her.

We (she and I) are comfortable about her being a little chunky and
understand it's normal for her age. I would like to get her into some
sort of a regular exercise program.

I'm sorry but i have to disagree with you here. I DO want her to
focus on what she puts in her body. She DOES have a problem with what
she eats, and always will. As her father it's my job to teach her how
to deal with this problem because she has to deal with it for the rest
of her life. This is the ONLY way she can live a healthy life.

That's what we are doing.

We don't see fat as being bad and she's very comfortable with how she
looks (as am i). We just wanted to know what kind of carb intake was
working for other ppl.

I no nothing about type 1, but a great deal about teen aged girls, a
bit of chub is normal depending on where she is in her puberty cycle; a
few extra pounds help with the typical growth spurts enjoyed by girls
somewhere from age 12 to 16
