Heh ... went to the asian market* today. I have a hankering for
potstickers, so I needed to pick up some gyoza, etc. While I was
there I bought something I have been meaning to for a while now.
They have a cooked pig. I don't know how they cook it, the skin
is crispy. I got upwards of a pound and a half. Oh, man, is this
stuff good! Flavorful and moist. I also picked up some ground pork
for the dumplings.
I wanted to get ginger but, for whatever reason, they sell it
prepacked in like a year's supply for me.
They have a bakery counter in the place. I just love those almond
cookies. Woman ahead of me ordered some indeciferable item
(sorry, my Chinese is rusty ... laugh), it looked good so I got one.
It's some delicious ... pound cake with lemon filling and a crusty
coating.
All in all, a very successful trip.

You lucked out. The last time I got something the name or description of
which I couldn't decipher, it was chicken feet. (I won't go into
details; I posted about that a while back.)

I'm pretty careful in a place like that, but I thought I'd be relatively
safe at the bakery. I am not adventurous enough to just buy
items there that I'm not reasonably familiar with.

Yeah, a bakery should be pretty safe. I was at a restaurant that I'd not
been in before, down in Chinatown.

Our Asian market had a broad clientele and has a full counter of
prepared meats and poultry. We can get ribs, pork, chicken, duck, lots
of organ meats, but my favorite of all sounds like what you describe -
lechon.

Was at a memorial dinner for a friend's wife last week. You could say he
went whole hog for the event. A 100 lb. roasted pig, complete with apple.
Man that was yummy!

I didn't know that word, I had to look it up. Thanks. It was
an experience conveying what quantity I wanted.

That sound like my store, too. I point a lot and use my hands to
indicate if I want more or less of something.
The Russian deli is even more difficult, though.

how odd. that's one item i don't think i've ever seen except in a
bin, and even at that as far as i know it's perfectly acceptable to
break off nodes from a larger piece.

I don't think I've ever seen ginger root packaged either, not
even at Whole Foods. That's just as well since even 1/3 lb
lasts me long enough to require freezing it.

It was beautiful, and in hindsight I probably should have
bought it there because the stuff in my supermarket was
awful. It was packaged the way you see a pound of
mushrooms in the supermarket.
That's what I normally do, too ... break off a nice piece
at the knuckle if they only have huge hands of ginger at
the store.

Peel the ginger. Cut into slices. Put slices in jar. Pour cooking
sherry over the slices so that they are covered.
Screw on lid. Keep in a cool place.
Lasts nearly forever.

Freezing fresh ginger in a plastic bag without any further
preparation works quite well. You only have to run hot water
over the end before grating or cutting off slices and refreezing
works. I won't say it lasts for ever, but still!
