The freezer portion of the side by side seems substantially larger than the
old one. So that's good. Not sure that the fridge portion is a lot bigger
but perhaps a little. The shelves in the door seem like they will stay in
place and not fly out at whim. Oddly there is more storage in the door, but
I don't usually like putting much in the door because it doesn't maintain a
constant temp. And it's quite a bit deeper and slightly taller than the old
one. The one drawback is there is no snack/dairy drawer in this one so that
will take some getting used to. I found it a handy place to put my
tortillas.
The dishwasher is a lot bigger inside and designed a lot better. The old
one had the flatware compartment stuck to the door and it was so small I
couldn't put my larger serving pieces or utensils in it. It also had a very
shallow top pullout so I couldn't put much in it. The new one has deep
pullouts on the top and bottom and a nice big flatware caddy. I can see
that I will actually be using this one! The old one got so little use
because it seemed I had to wash so much by hand, simply because it wouldn't
fit in there.
Anyway... I'm happy!

Your old dishwasher sounds ideal for me. I like silverware caddies on
the door so it doesn't take room from the plates and bowls. I've
never had a shallow top shelf, but it sounds good for my purposes -
especially if you can adjust the height.

Nope. Couldn't adjust the height. And it really didn't hold much at all.
Only really small bowls, custard cups and the like. The silverware caddy
didn't hold enough of my silverware so I had to wash some by hand and the
larger spoons wouldn't fit in there. It was a joke.

That's what I had to do too, but they often would fall down to the bottom
and burn on the element so I started washing them by hand. |

When I replaced my old dishwasher I specifically looked for the
silverware in the door, I love that. I'm not knocking your new
machine, Julie, I'm happy you like it. Just that my experience with
dishwashers is that silverware thing in the middle takes up too much
space. I can fit all the silverware I want in my door model, and the
larger stuff (much larger, like mixing spoons, ladles) fit on this little
fold down shelf over the cups.
Otherwise, I have been known to lie the large things across the
top of the cups/glasses ... if you place them across among those
items, they do not fall through. You just have to take a little
care how you arrange them.
I love the "new" tall tub designs, you can fit so much more
than previous machines. I don't bother adjusting the upper
rack, it's deep enough to hold whatever I want and I'm not
inclined to put much large stuff up there.

My dishwasher has two silverware containers that can be combined into
one or used separately. I can put them any place in the dishwasher I
want to. I can do a top rack only wash or remove the top rack
completely and put some big pots in the bottom. Both of those
features are wonderful during the canning season.

To each their own I guess. I hated the in the door thing and much prefer a
separate basket that I can easily lift out. My old one didn't have any fold
down things and the top was so shallow that stuff had a tendency to fall
overboard. There was no way at all to secure it.

They did on mine because there was nothing to keep them there.

G.E. model # GSD4000NCC. It's one of the cheaper ones. |

That's what I do with most of the larger serving items and mixing
spoons. Even though they do fit into the upright flatware holder, they
don't wash very well there. So I lay them down in the top rack, and to
keep them from being knocked down I position cups or bowls on top of
their handles.

When it's time to replace my dishwasher, I want one of the tall tubs.
Until then, the machine I have does fine. |

It's a basket that easily lifts out ... as a matter of fact there is a
place on the bottom rack where I could also put it. That
place is where I put glass baking dishes, though.

Okay, that's the dishwasher... looks like it has all you need but I'd
prefer a stainless steel interior.
What about the fridge? |
