Heinz to Introduce Low-Carb Ketchup

CHICAGO (Reuters) - H.J. Heinz Co. on Friday said it would launch a
low-carbohydrate version of its popular ketchup, and other new products,
as it aims to revitalize products and tap demand for foods popularized
by trends such as the Atkins diet.

The new "One Carb" ketchup is the latest in a string of variations
within Heinz's $1.2 billion ketchup business in recent years. The
company recently introduced an organic ketchup, on top of colored
versions aimed at kids and new packaging such as an upside down bottle.

The new ketchup has only one gram of carbohydrates, 75 percent fewer
than Heinz' regular ketchup, the company said.

I know that one thing they're doing is using Splenda as their sweetener.

Ketchup is as much corn syrup and sugar as it is tomatoes.

Another thing, a serving of Ketchup is like two teaspoons. So not much.

Cool! I hope it tastes good and is readily available. I have gotten a few
different brands via mail order. They were expensive and also yucky.

This I have got to see. A product made from a vegetable, that is so
concentrated it takes 5-8 times the amount of the vegetable to get a useable
product.. Only 1 carb? LOL

On the label a serving is 1tbl. A tbl has three tsp in it. FYI

For folks that keep close tabs on their carbs, it would make a difference.

3T (which is not much) of regular ketchup would have 10.5g carbs.
3T of the new ketchup would have 3g.

For those 7.5g, you could have:

8 medium strawberries
A cup of popcorn
3 large pickles
or
20 M&M's.

I'm not much of a ketchup eater, but for some this will help a lot.

I can eat quite a lot of it. I've never actually measured, but I'd be
willing to bet I could easily eat 1/4 cup over some hash browns, my roasted
potatoes and onions, or a few French fries.

If this ketchup has only 1 g per serving, that's 3 g less than regular
ketchup.

I'll have to tell my mom about this. Her one downfall is M&M's - or
anything else chocolate. Especially with the holidays coming up.
