Seasoned eels imported from China and containing the carcinogen
malachite green were recently found to have been illegally distributed
in local markets.
The imported eels had vanished from local markets late last year after
the carcinogen was detected in multiple samples.
But following a recent request from KBS, the Korea Advanced Food
Research Institute tested eight seasoned eel products currently being
sold in markets and found that seven of the analyzed products contained
malachite green.
Officials assume the tested eel products were mostly manufactured last
year and were not initially sold because they had been suspected of
containing the carcinogen.
Following the test results, the Korea Food and Drug Administration
collected 36 frozen Chinese eel products and detected the carcinogen in
five of them.
Malachite green, which is commonly sprayed on fish to prevent disease,
was designated a banned substance by Korean health authorities from late
last month.
