Okay, here's a question for those of you who keep kosher (or at least know
the rules to keeping kosher).
Is catfish Kosher?
-ginny
(who is reading a book about Jewish cooking and it doesn't list catfish is
the 'do' or 'don't' catagory.)

You don't really want to know. If you did, you would've typed "Is catfish
kosher?" into a google search, and you would've gotten the information
instantly. |

No, it has no scales. Sturgeon is not kosher either due to the type of
scales it has. |

Nope. Catfish do not have scales.

What, and deny you the opportunity to snipe? Ginny is far too gracious

There's absolutely nothing attractive or positive about being totally

It's rules like these that enforce my devout Atheism.

That's easy! The REAL question is: are salamanders kosher? |

Quick answer, no. (Long answer involves 4 biological types of scales,
only two of them are considered true scales for kosher purposes, and
those have to overlap, so some fish with the right kinds of scales are
not kosher....)
Which book are you reading? Any really interesting recipes?

To all who answered me honestly, thank you. For those who took a
piss.....well, bite me....but I know I'm not kosher. .
To answer Maxine's question, it is called simply Jewish Cookbook, by Mildred
Grossberg Bellin subtitled 'International Cooking According to the Jewish
Dietary Laws' published in 1958. Since it was published so long ago and the
fact catfish has just in the last decade or so become 'haute cuisine'
outside of the Mississippi Delta and other rural southern parts, I wasn't
sure how those who kept a kosher home classified it as I am sure it wasn't
at the local fishmonger's in NYC (where she was from) when Mrs. Bellin wrote
the book.
Could I have looked it up on Google. Yeah, sure I could have, but I value
the input from those like Boron, Maxine and Margaret who 'know' kosher by
touch and experience unlike the Googlebot who would just regurgitate
information. Hell, even Sheldon puts his two cents in when he cuts and
pastes......
There are some pretty neat looking recipes in the book, unfortunately I
haven't gotten through what can keep company with what on which counterspace
yet (the whole dairy/meat thing) to get to the recipes. When I do, I will
post.
Thanks.

How do I always seem to get woven into threads where I haven't
participated, but then ignored in threads where I do participate?!?!?
And I don't "cut and paste" anything here... the correct nomenclature
is *copy and paste*. |
