I had an interesting question from a chef the other day: How many pints in a
pound?

Is this is a legitimate question? I had always thought of pints in fluid
ounces.

Thanks,

David

You're right in general, but many foods have a density near water, so
there's carry-over. As near as one needs to know in the kitchen and most
other places, three U.S gallons -- 24 pints -- of water weighs 25
pounds. So the old rhyme, "A pint's a pound the world around" is almost
true in the U.S., but not, say, in G.B. (There, a pint is 20 ounces, not
16, and the ounces are ever so slightly different.) If you need a cup --
8 oz. both in the U.S. and G.B. -- of flour and you weigh out half a
pound, you won't be far wrong. Still every cook had a measuring cup and
postal scaled are cheap, so there's no need to guess.

Simplistic. If you mean oz. avoirdupois, in the US, close for water.
In Great Britain, off by 20%. see my earlier reply.

In the UK - 8 pints (one gallon) of water weighs 10 pounds as an
approximation

But - certainly in the Imperial Measuring system pints are fluid measure and
pounds solid measure in general use.
